ABSTRACT
The discrepancies between Brazilian laws and practices with respect to the equal sharing of property are analyzed through two case studies of groups descended from European immigrants: Italian settlers in Nova Pádua (Rio Grande do Sul), and German and Swiss settlers in Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro). Using data covering three generations, the strategies are described that sought to maintain continuity in the devolution of landed property, lest estates be broken up and the parcels dispersed. Special attention is paid to the condition of women, whose ouster from succession through marriage is avoided but owing to a renunciation of the matrimonial status and the prestige ensuing from it. The economic and social changes under way in Brazilian society are putting the rules and practices related to succession to the proof.
